How Do You Define Beauty

It probably conjures up thoughts of creating your own personal style or fashion statement. Maybe you can start wearing a funky hat or rippy jeans. It must be your hair right? I want to start by defining your beauty from the inside and we’ll work out from there. So let’s get to the definition, are you ready? Webster’s dictionary, defines beauty as; the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit. Wow! We’ve been obsessed with physical beauty for thousands of years and there it was right there in the dictionary, ‘pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit!’ Okay, so that’s the dictionary talking but what are your words for what exalts you inside and out? And how do you get there? If you were to think of your life as a business you would want to come up with a catchy name, check! That’s your name. Then you would want to think about what you want the business to do and be and accomplish. Of course you would want to be well regarded and respected. Inside and out you would want to be nice to look at and be with and definitely something that plays an integral part of society right? Well let’s do the next step in you want to live your life.

Let’s take a very important bit of time here to carve out exactly how you want to be perceived from this day forward! It’s homework time. I want you to write your name, and a little dash next to it like you were writing a definition. Next I want you to define how you would like to be perceived. This is your vision for the ultimate you. If you already are many of the things you would like to be, outstanding! But be sure to jot those down to reinforce your who you would like to continue to be. Whether that is funny, outgoing, respected, well-read, generous, positive, influential, resourceful, pretty, hot, stunning, business-like, well-mannered, (fill in) whatever that is that would be the BEST YOU for you that is going to be the right answer. Now go ahead and jump on that, I’ll give you a minute. Right now I hope you are looking at the page and thinking that sure looks like someone you’d like to be best friends with, work with, be married to, etc. That’s exactly the point! The first part of living a dream life is dreaming what it should look like and we just did that.

Now the task becomes walking boldly into that visualization, keeping the words we wrote above displayed somewhere to remind us of who we are and who we are going to be. You will take those attributes and qualities that you aspire to and make a conscious effort to turn them into reality. This isn’t going to be easy and won’t happen overnight so give yourself a break as you work on them. The deal is though that by simply working on and believing them you will turn perception into reality.

I know it sounds simple, because it is! One of my favorite author/speakers, Wayne Dyer, has a book and a phrase that I love, “Change the way you look at things and the way you look at things will change.” You are going to start by finding your true beauty where it has been all the time, in your heart, your mind, and in your mirror! Quit asking the mirror on the wall who’s the fairest of them all, wake up and TELL the mirror!

Woman honored by the White House earns Guinness Record as longest living quadriplegic

More than 50 years after a neck-breaking diving accident,
Lani Deauville shares her story of how she continues to beat the odds.

When 17-year-old Lani Deauville dove from a seawall on a Jacksonville, Florida beach in 1958, it didn’t seem particularly risky. The athletic champion diver was used to diving from bridges, racing cars at high speeds and generally, as Deauville remembers, “performing any scary activity I can think of.”  With this particular dive into shallow water, however, she slammed hard into the ocean floor, breaking the fourth, fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae in her neck. She was paralyzed from the neck down.

Now more than 50 years later, she continues to inspire others with her story of survival and joy of life. Along with other achievements, she was recently awarded the Guinness World Record for being the longest-living quadriplegic. She credits her longevity in part to exercise and to supplementing her diet with the whole-food supplement developed by her brother-in-law which is now called Greens+.

“If you broke your neck in the 1950s,” explains Deauville, “you died. If you survived the initial injury, the life expectancy of a quadriplegic back then was five years.” Quadriplegics typically battle a variety of health complications, including urinary tract infections, pneumonia, central nervous-system infections, gastrointestinal ulcerations, osteoporosis and bowel blockages.

Deauville refused to accept her fate. She changed from a neurosurgeon to an orthopedic surgeon when the neurosurgeon wouldn’t recommend surgery to stabilize her neck because he considered her case to be hopeless. After getting neck-stabilization surgery and spending a year and a half in the hospital fighting skin ulcers, spasms and infections, Deauville became the first quadriplegic patient of the State of Florida’s Vocational Rehabilitation Agency.

Over the next few years, Deauville pursued an education with the same level of drive that used to propel her adrenaline-soaked youth. She obtained her GED and earned her undergraduate degree – all at a time when quadriplegics usually stayed home and out of sight. Lack of disability-friendly ramps and facilities sometimes meant that Deauville had to hire strong assistants to carry her up and down stairs. After graduating with honors, she was accepted to the University of Alabama to pursue a doctorate in clinical psychology.

During her eight years as a student, Deauville continued to battle critical illnesses that kept her hospitalized at least once a year. A dangerous infection ultimately led her to leave school and focus on regaining her health and earning income.

Following stints as a rehabilitation psychologist and then as a coordinator in the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitation Services, Deauville helped write universal-access legislation for disabled people that became law in 1974 in Florida and was adopted in part by the federal government.

“Now that the United States is more accessible to persons in wheelchairs, a physically disabled person can go nearly anywhere.” In 1976, Deauville and her husband Jude were invited to the White House by President Ford, who honored her as “Disabled Employee of the Year.”

In 1980, Deauville became the first female and disabled person to direct the Florida State Vocational Rehabilitation Agency – the very agency that was responsible for her own rehabilitation years before.

But the recurring illnesses that tend to plague quadriplegics were attacking with increasing frequency, exacerbated by the fact that a very busy Deauville wasn’t eating healthy food or getting enough exercise. In 1987, after retirement, she broke a hip and suffered from several infections. “Each hospitalization saw me ending up worse off than before,” she remembers.

Everything changed in the late 80s. Her brother-in-law – Sam Graci, a Canadian biochemist – had been developing a highly nutritious “green drink” made up of super foods that he thought might help improve Deauville’s health. “Sam used me as his favorite guinea pig,” says Deauville.

He continued to refine the powder into a supplement – mixable with juice or water – that became known as Greens+ ( “I’ve been supplementing my food intake with this formula for 20 years,” says Deauville, “and it has totally transformed my life and health. After suffering numerous hospitalizations for more than 30 years, I can say that I’ve not had a major illness since, and I am healthier today than I’ve ever been.”

“In retrospect, I wouldn’t exchange five minutes of my life with anyone. I am living a wonderfully blessed life.”

Right now everyone is watching closely to see what the politicians in Washington are going to do about Health Care Reform.  As a Nurse Practitioner for 30 years, I am concerned that people do not understand the situation and the critical state of health we are facing in our nation.  For the first time in history, our children, teens and young adults have epidemic proportions of health problems seen only in the past in those who were at least old enough to join AARP.  We are faced with a nation of children who potentially will die before their parents!!.  That is not a good situation to be in, because if we are to continue to grow and prosper as a nation, our children have to be healthy and productive citizens.  The baby boomers are all growing old and won’t be able to produce the economic security of our country and if our youth are sick, who will take us into the future?  The overhauling of the Health Care System is important but what is more important is to ensure that people are working proactively to restore health and stay healthy.  HealthCare Reform is about people understanding Wellness and how to be reponsible for themselves.  In my last blog I discussed how stress and emotions affect our health.  Remember that over 95% of all physical and emotional illness is now considered to be manifestations of STRESS, which can be translated to OUT OF BALANCE.  We have POWER in controlling this process and rather than feeling like victims in relation to Health Care Reform, (when we feel like victims, it actually creates more stress/imbalance in our body and that contributes to poor health), I am asking you to take a stand right now, feel powerful and learn how to create your own Individual Health Care Reform.  Then, by the time the government gets it all worked out, you can be well on your way to having a renewed health system in your own body.

 Your most valuable asset is your Immune System.  This system provides a sophisticated, protective response to physical, mental and environmental stressors.  Its job is to defend by resisting invasion of infections, provide homeostasis by removal of worn out host cells and surveillance by finding and destroying mutant cells. Liken it to the DOD (Department of Defense) in our country.  Your magnificent body will work until its dying breath to create balance and this immune system is one of the major processes it employs.  Every cell in your body has some sort of immune response to try to defend itself from invaders or anything it perceives to be a threat to the state of balance. 

 So what are the steps to protecting and enhancing the Immune System

 1. Good Elimination.  One of the major processes of defense is the body’s ability to recognize “invaders” attack and break them down so it can “get them out of your body”. Removing them requires good elimination processes.  We eliminate; through the skin when we perspire, through the respiratory system when we exhale, cough and blow our noses, have tears and through the urine and stool.   If we can’t eliminate the toxins they build up inside and that can quickly burden even the healthiest immune system.  Optimum is having a bowel movement after every time you eat, but if you don’t go that often you should have at least one per day.  Eating foods rich in Fiber and drinking plenty of fluids are two very important things you can do to improve this system.   

 Now you might ask how these “invaders” actually get into the body in the first place.  Most come in through skin contact, ingestion, mucosal contact and respiratory contact.  Funny how they actually come in the same way they get out.  However, an amazing story must go on inside before this elimination process can happen and there are many things that we can do to make sure we are creating the best possible scenario.  Keeping these systems healthy helps to keep invaders out but when they do get in, make sure the path of elimination is clear enough to get them out. 

 2. Gut Health One of our largest defense lines internally is our blood cells, specifically our White Bloods cells.  These cells have responsibilities depending on their type and these cells have different places in the body where they grow and get their fighting strength.  One of the major places is the lining of the gut.  In fact about 80% of the fighting power comes from this area.   Remember, ingestion is one of the ways invaders get into our body…… so it is extremely important to keep the gut healthy. 

 Having good nutrition and elimination patterns are very important.   You can do that by eating healthy food…. Following the 5 A day for fruits and vegetables (making sure you wash them before eating is important).  The nutrition, vitamins and minerals are vitally important to give the cells the fuel they need to develop and have the energy to fight.  Spend a few minutes each day in the sun (15 minutes 3 times per week) to increase Vitamin D absorption which helps Calcium do its job of keeping bones and teeth healthy. 

 3.  Drink Water  Every cell needs plenty of fluid to develop and function.  Dehydration is a chronic problem that creates pain, inflammation and lots of other problems that can destroy the immune system.  Drinking plenty of water is crucial.  To know you are drinking the right amount…. Take your weight in pounds and divide by 2, which is the number of ounces of water you need per day.  Cut down on caffeine, sugar and dairy products.  Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it actually makes you eliminate water.  So cutting down on caffeinated drinks is important.  If you do drink caffeine, drink a big glass of water along with the caffeinated drink.  The great thing about water is that it also tastes better the more you drink of it.   Sugar creates a lot of inflammation in blood vessels and cells, the more time your immune system is spending on handling that inflammation, the less time it has to spend on the invaders and germs.  Dairy increases mucous production which requires increased effort in elimination but having plenty of water thins down the mucous and allows your body to break it down for better elimination.  .  

 4.  Good Oral Hygiene  As you can see the mucous membranes is an entry site for invaders and the mouth is actually the portal for the digestive system.  Keeping teeth brushed, flossed, brushing or scraping the tongue and keeping the lips soft and supple are good deterrents to entry of germs.  Gargling with salt water or mouth wash may help.  Seeing your dentist regularly for check up’s and cleanings will add years to your dental health.  We know that gum disease can be directly related to heart health so make sure you have good dental care. 

 5.  The Respiratory system is important because we breathe in airborne germs.  Staying away from people that are already sick, having exposure to fresh air and airing out our homes and cars can help to dilute the strength of germs.  Wiping off phones prior to using them with alcohol wipes or even instant hand sanitizer on a tissue.  If you use a shared phone in the workplace or you use or allow others to use your cell phone, clean it between use to cut down on transmission of germs.   Throw away your tissues after you use them, don’t expect someone else to pick up after you.  Contain sneezes and coughs by doing it into your arm, placing your hand over your mouth or using a tissue to cover.   Just make sure to wash hands afterwards.  Everyone knows the dangers of smoking and how it increases the chances of lung cancer so if you smoke, STOP, if you don’t smoke, don’t start.  Stay away from smoke as much as you can.  If you have a respiratory disease like Asthma, Chronic Bronchitis, COPD make sure you follow your healthcare provider’s directions in using your medications and routinely attend educational sessions with a health educator so you know how to use your medications and promote good lung health.

 6. Hand Washing is the best preventative measure you can use.  Most invaders come in through the mucosal lining of the body, with the mouth being the first portal of entry.    Clean hands before eating.  Clean hands before going to the bathroom and after, clean hands before touching anything around the face, nose or mouth. Clean fruits and vegetables prior to eating and clean food preparation and eating surfaces before and after preparing foods. 

 7. Rest; the best way for your body to restore and heal is to have a good nights sleep.  Sleep for 8 hours per night.  Sleep cannot be restorative if lights are on in the room (except for dim night light), radio playing or TV going all night.  This does not allow deep REM sleep stages and interferes with many brain chemicals including Growth Hormone, needed to heal the daily ravages of fighting off invaders.  Giving the gut a rest at night is important too, so don’t eat big meals before going to bed.  

 8. Exercise is an important aspect of the immune system function because it enhances the elimination process.  By increasing our heart rate we can pump toxins out faster through our breath and perspiration.  But please make sure to stay well hydrated while exercising so these processes can move toxins out, not compound their storage in the body. 

 9. Managing Emotional Stress is as important as all of the other things combined.  Most people don’t realize that every stressful event you experience creates a process known as fight or flight response in the body.  The process actually creates a cascade response of over 1400 chemicals and hormones.  All of which affect the entire immune system response.  One stressful event can diminish the effect of the white blood cells, specifically T-cells, for up to 6 hours.  The body doesn’t care if it is the actual event or just replaying it in your mind, it responds the same way.  Emotions of fear, worry, anxiety, anger, pain, depression and grief all have the same effect.  This makes it extremely important to find positive ways to cope with these emotions.  Spending quality time doing things that create joy, love and appreciation everyday has such a positive effect on the immune system that it can actually elevate the function of the immune system for a 24 hour period. 

 10.  Avoid Chemicals   each and every day the body is bombarded by thousands of “invaders” transported through all of the portals of entry.  Pesticides, Chemicals and additives in our food supply, medications, and microorganisms all enter through our gut and ignite the immune response.  Exhaust, fumes, debris, air fresheners, perfumes, smoke all enter through our respiratory system and ignite our immune response.  Chemicals, germs, lotions, soaps, shampoos, cosmetics, all enter through our skin and ignite our immune response.  Negative thoughts and emotions bombard us constantly and many times become our “operating system”, this comes from within but is an invader none the less and it ignites our immune response.

 If you begin to examine each of these ideas and try to find one thing you can do in each of the 10 categories, you will be well on your way to establishing Health Care Reform and in the process creating a whole new Bill of Health for you and your family.   I will continue to discuss each of these topics in more detail with lots of ideas for creating a more solid platform for HealthCare Reform in my next blog here at the Healthy Dish.

Bodywork: Healing from the Outside…in

 There are so many benefits to see a bodyworker. As most of us have realized, stress creates most of the imbalances in the body. Massage therapy actually lowers cortisol levels and raises serotonin. Immunity (T-cells) divide rapidly to create a higher immunity. Naturally increasing dopamine (which lowers pain, depression, helps with ADD/ADHD symptoms),increase histamine levels that lower inflammation, which is the #1 cause of pain in the body. We have our own pharmacy, receiving bodywork helps you tap into it.

As each client comes to me for different services, and for different health reasons, we are able to look at symptoms of pain related to different stressors. Some come weekly to manage chronic pain, some for injury related stress, as they are active and fit, some just know their lives and jobs are stressful and receive massage therapy to increase their immunity from viral attacks.

Massage therapists are trained in most states from 1000- 2000 hour programs, that usually works out to 2 years of education before they receive accreditation from their state and national licensure boards. Massage Therapy has been an amazing part of my life. 12 years ago I went on a journey that has brought me to places I never knew. How many times have you recognized you were stressed out?  Did you realize that the stress is created by the emotions you experience on a daily basis?  Many people recognize the feelings of stress but don’t understand they can be broken down to identify actual feelings.  First let’s get a basic understanding of the word stress.  If you look in any dictionary there are many different definitions but the common language to all is that stress equals an “imbalance” which over time creates deterioration.   We can experience imbalance in our physical body, our thoughts, our feelings, our financial picture, our relationships, our performance of work, academics and sports and in our spiritual connection.  Many people think that stress equates to something that causes tension and will say “Oh, I don’t feel stressed at all” but when we start associating the feelings that create stress, almost everyone can identify with them. 

Pain, Anger, Worry, Anxiety, Fear, Rage, Procrastination, Guilt, Sorrow, Grief, Depression, Impatience, Prejudice, Boredom, Intolerance, Resentment, Indifference, the list goes on and on.  These are the emotions of stress and all contribute to an imbalance in our body and our body’s natural ability to protect itself.  In addition to these feelings we have physical stressors that also contribute to the imbalance.  Injuries that create poor posture, pain, loss of internal organs, exposure to environmental pollutants, ingestion of alcohol, tobacco or drugs all create imbalance.  Even prescribed medications create significant stress in the body.  The food we eat, the amount of fluids we drink, the number of hours we sleep, the quality of sleep and the amount of exercise we get can all contribute to physical stress.   No matter how you experience it, stress KILLS.  It kills heart cells, brain cells and the immune system.  In fact, the National Institute of Stress has reported that over 95% of all health care visits, physical and mental health, are directly related to STRESS.

These emotions communicate with every cell in your body constantly and your body responds by adjusting chemicals and hormones.  Things like adrenaline, cortisol, endorphins, melatonin, serotonin, blood sugar (glucose), sodium, chloride, insulin, cholesterol, growth hormone and all of the female and male reproductive hormones.  They also affect your heart rate, your breathing rate, your blood pressure and your temperature.  In fact every operation in your body responds to these chemicals and hormones.  One incident of these emotions has the ability to inhibit your immune system for up to 6 hours afterwards.  And your body does not differentiate between the real event or just an emotional recall.  It can respond exactly the same way to thinking about the incident as it did to the original event.  Just being angry for a few days can have a very negative effect on your ability to protect yourself from germs, virus or other ailments, inhibit your ability to focus, affect your memory, impair your creative thinking and problem solving, make you more likely to get injured or have another argument. Then you just start the spiral downward because one incident can actually increase the opportunity for more stressful emotions.  How do you win?

There are many ways to relieve stress but the most important thing is to recognize the stress as an emotion and look at the cause.  Perhaps the stress you feel from work is really about the sadness you feel when you have to leave your child at the daycare, or your anxiety about not getting a bill paid on time, or about the fight you had with your spouse the night before.  It might not have anything to do with work at all.  Once you recognize the feeling and begin to deal with the emotions more directly you will find your stress levels begin to change significantly.  Evaluate your physical stressors; nutrition, sleep, exercise and love in your life to see how they contribute to the stressful feelings.  At times stress can be reduced easily by just recognizing the emotion and taking a deep breath to remove yourself from the feeling just for that moment.  When you focus on the breathing you break the connection to the emotion.   I teach my clients how to effectively use techniques and the latest in cardio/neuro/ physical (heart/brain/body) technology and biofeedback that changes over 1400 chemicals and hormones in their body, restoring the balance which promotes a state of natural healing.

Stress can be an inside job that quickly moves to your outside world or it can be initiated by an outside situation that quickly moves to the inside of your body and mind.  Either way it affects you inside and out.  No matter how you look at it, the emotions of stress are associated with negative energy and once you can identify this energy you can harness it and Transform Stress to Success in all areas of your life.
